Secret Life of Bees: by Sue Kidd

Jason and I listened to the cds on our way to Washington DC. Although
this isn't something I probably would have picked out for myself
(Niki's mom gave them to me), we both ended up really enjoying the
story itself and how it was narrated. I imagine the book would be a
really quick read. It is essentially about a young southern girl who
has had a rough life and is trying to find out about her dead mother.
I'm not going to say much else because I don't want to give anything
away--if you want to know more about it, just send me an email.

  • I avoided this book because it seemed too Oprah book club, but then someone chose it for my work book club, which often reads Oprah books. Secret Life was a quick read and overall I enjoyed it (the description of the women's fancy hats especially stands out). And during the lunchtime book club discussion, the host brought in peanuts which we poured in cups of Coca-Cola, a la the description in the book. Surprisingly tasty.

  • I had assumed that the coke/peanut thing was some silly author fabrication. I'll have to try it now that someone else has gone first.

I was very intrigued with the purple homey also. I would love to see/taste some.
