The Raw Shark Texts: Steven Hall

If you commissioned Alain de Botton to turn the movie Memento into a novel, but make it more science-fictiony, you might come up with something along the lines of The Raw Shark Texts. The protagonist wakes up with no idea who he is, and is guided by a series of letters from his former self. It's good, it's weird, and it features the crypto-zoology of purely conceptual sharks.

  • I remember reading a review of this when it first came out. Also, I'm intrigued that Audrey Niffenegger (Time Traveler's Wife) is the book's guest reviewer on Amazon. (Anna, if you wanted to start up the "mail a book to someone" exchange again, I'd love to read this one. My library has a holds on their few copies).

  • I actually got this one from the library, using my zen approach to reading -- I get books almost exclusively from their browsing sections, which they replenish at the expense of people pining away on the hold lists. No guarantee you'll get something specific, but you'll always find something interesting. And once I got a Harry Potter on the Saturday after it was released!
